The Archipelago of Amelia Earhart
by Catherine Holloway
Just the thought of it was excruciating. We were aboard NAI'A in March 1997, 1000 miles out to sea from Fiji, at a tiny uninhabited island oasis in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. We were at a spectacular equatorial atoll most people only dream about, moored over pristine and remote coral reef that no-one had ever explored. And yet, the expedition's immutable rules and regulations declared: "NO SCUBA DIVING."

As I've oft noted in my various dispatches to Scuba Times from the ends of the earth, timing can be crucial to a good dive experience and especially so when it comes to the company you keep. But when my associate Mitch Skaggs and his significant other, Tanya Burnett, said they had someone they wanted me to meet, I figured it was another well-meaning soul who wanted me to wax philosophically on the technical aspects of diving or to lament how determinism had faded recently from theoretical physics.

No matter how hard you try you just can't ignore Fiji's lush coral gardens; they are just about everywhere you go. This has to be the soft coral capital of the world.

DIVE THE LAND OF THE FIJI FIREWALKERS
Text and Photography by Paddy Ryan
Fiji, the place makes an indelible impression on those of us lucky enough to have lived there. Part of the joy is in the warmth of the people. Revisit after several year's absence and chances are that you will be remembered...that's special.

Life Aboard NAI'A
By Cathie Holloway
Silhouetted under a luminous late afternoon sky, the NAI'A cruises toward her home-port near Nadi. Drawn together on the top deck by the warmth of a tropical sunset and a camaraderie that sailing divers know so well, passengers swap sea stories, sip cold beer and soak up the fresh air and sunshine while it lasts. The wind is behind us and so is a week of outstanding diving. Soon this fantastic voyage will finish: existing only in our memories and on the pages of a photo album.

FISH SOUP IN FIJI
by Pete Atkinson
February, when I was on the 40m live-aboard yacht NAI'A, is not the best time for good visibility in the Fiji Islands. This is the height of Cyclone season, the water is a warm 28 degrees Celsius, and the plankton is blooming. Visibility can be as low as 25m. But although it is cyclone season, the chances of one affecting your trip are very small. What I love about this season is the weak tradewinds, often blowing at no more than 10-15 knots.

A MARVELOUS, MAGICAL TOUR OF FABULOUS FIJI
by Bonnie Cardone
It was a glorious day when NAI'A unfurled her sails to run before the Fijian winds. One hundred twenty feet long, she's very solid and sure in the water and, with only the wind to power her, she slipped silently through the seas. After a morning of diving and an excellent lunch, we found it almost impossible to keep our eyes open.

JONAH AND THE WHALE
by Catherine Holloway
Rugby and religion reign supreme down here. At least, that's in the places where following football is not officially classed as worship already. I'm talking about the much romanticized South Pacific islands of Fiji and Tonga and Rugby is the particular brand of football played so proudly in these parts.

Hammerheads Before Breakfast
Story and photos by Pete Atkinson
When the noise of the anchor chain had died away, and the 40 metre live-aboard yacht NAI'A was safely anchored in the lagoon at Wakaya, I went in search of the owner/manager, Rob Barrel. 'Er, Rob, don't you think that maybe a tuna head is essential dive equipment at a site like this?' So we took one out of the fridge for the pre-breakfast dive.

WONDERFUL FIJI
ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL
by Catherine Holloway
Photos by Catherine Holloway, Rob Barrel, J. Auburn, Rusiate Bale, Maria Lopez, Ken Yeung
Rob and I had our heads hunkered down into some hard columns of fire coral off Wakaya Island. A precocious pair of scarlet lady cleaner shrimp had set up a grooming salon among the stinging pillars and dozens of skittish anthias were queuing for service.

FIJI'S FINEST DIVING
NAI'A Cruises Fiji
The reefs of Fiji are open to explorers from the NAI'A - and getting there is pure luxury. There are only a few truly magical places left in the world, and most of them are not easy to reach. The Fiji Islands are the exception to the rule.

Heating up in the Lomaiviti Group
by Ed Weber
The action was heating up. A half-dozen gray reef sharks were circling our periphery, gradually moving in; attracted by the bait line of fish carcasses just to my right. Their behavior suddenly changed and the first shark rocketed in for a bite, setting off a chain reaction of lightning quick bolts of speed and frenzy.

BREATHTAKING ADVENTURES
by Jett Britnell
"Did you see it?" Jay Auburn asked excitedly, as he heaved himself back into the zodiac. "See what?" I replied. "The whale shark!", Jay squealed with delight. I stood there with a stunned look as the words "WHALE SHARK" thundered through my brain.

SAILOR CHARTS UNKNOWN WATERS
by Tammy Peluso
A hundred faces, several hundred eyes, watching, charging, swirling around us in a frenzy of silver streaks. As time, and the threat of attack passes, the jacks accept us into their fold, allowing the chasm of blue water to close to a mere two feet.
