A Special Project
Global warming poses a tremendous threat to the nations of the tropical South Pacific, yet the phenomenon is little understood: indeed, there is debate as to whether the atmosphere is warming at all. The University of the South Pacific has enlisted to help of NAI'A to set and monitor a series of extremely accurate sea water temperature recorders which provide a baseline record of ocean temperature at thirty feet against which to calibrate satellite-derived ocean surface temperature measurements. At present we have six recorders spread throughout the Fiji Islands. Check out the Sea Water Temperature Data gathered since the first year of recording.
We are excited about the project because of the obvious benefits for understanding global warming, but also because it gives us a very accurate temperature record at several of our best dive sites which will be useful in understanding the dynamics of Fiji's marine environment, not to mention facilitating wetsuit thickness predictions.
