January
of 98 took us to Fiji's national island preserve, Namena,
the famed and adored garden isle of Taveuni, as well as
some of Northern Lau's untamed reefs and atolls. Guests
joined us during turtle nesting season on our research
expedition. Malika Sobie, a Fijian Ph.D. student at the
University of the South Pacific (USP) worked to find,
observe, capture and tissue-sample endangered turtles
both underwater and on the beaches. The study aims to
fill-in the giant holes in the family tree of South Pacific
turtle populations - and ultimately to discover the last
of the great turtle rookeries.
